Mission

Building AI tools that rekindle reflection.

Civilis: cīvis (citizen); peace in community

The problem that keeps getting worse

Modern feeds are optimized with AI algorithms to keep a person moving: another card, another autoplay, another notification. That's a reasonable design goal if engagement is the metric. It's a poor one if the goal is understanding or genuinely experiencing something: a piece of music playing behind a social media post or even a season of own life.

Reflection is slower than that by nature. It needs a moment where nothing new is being pushed at you, and something you already have, like a memory, image, or feeling, gets to sit still long enough to be looked at properly.

We don't think AI is naturally opposed to that. In fact, we think it's been pointed the wrong direction.

Our tools should reflect our humanity back at us, rather than distracting us from it.

What reflection means, in practice

Three qualities we test every experience against.

It slows you down honestly

Not through friction or dark patterns, but by giving you something worth pausing for.

It stays legible

You should always be able to trace what the model did to your material and roughly why. A reflection you can't recognize yourself in isn't one.

It respects the source

The art, photos, and recordings people bring us are theirs. Our experiences simply elevate their beauty and meaning.

Who's building this

Civilis is a small studio, not a platform with a growth team. Right now, we're a team of <5.

We won't fill this page with invented testimonials. We're in our earliest stages and hope to bring our work to the public soon.
